It really shouldn’t come as a surprise to Eagles fans, or football fans in general for that matter. Philadelphia management has never had any qualms of letting go of faithful employees who’ve poured their hearts and souls into the city and team, citing their role as a business. And, while often heartless, that’s their right and their prerogative.

However, a latest incident as reported by Philly Inquirer columnist John Gonzalez shows just how black the organization’s heart really is.

The Birds fired game-day west gate chief Dan Leone after he posted the following message on his Facebook page: “Dan is [explitive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver…Dam Eagles R retarded.”

And like that. BANG. He’s gone. To make matters worse, the six-year employee who missed only one game during his tenure suffers from something called transverse myelitis, and as such has a left leg significantly weaker than his right, and was often forced to haul around the stadium on duty in a wheelchair.

Say what you will about Dawkins being left to head West, he wound up with a very lucrative contract, whereas Leone didn’t receive so much as a pat on the back.

Eagles fire employee over Facebook comment (trying to save Face…book)

A Facebook post criticizing his employer, the Philadelphia Eagles, cost a stadium operations worker his job, according to a story in Monday’s Philadelphia Inquirer.

Dan Leone, who the Inquirer said worked as a west gate chief, was unhappy the team let Brian Dawkins sign with the Denver Broncos in free agency. According to the newspaper, Leone posted the following on his Facebook page: “Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver … Dam Eagles R Retarted!!”

Despite deleting the comment, Leone told the Inquirer the Eagles fired him by phone days later.

“I shouldn’t have put it up there,” Leone said, according to the Inquirer. “I was ticked off, and I let my emotions go, but I didn’t offend any one person or target a specific individual. I was just upset that we lost such a great guy. Dawkins was one of my favorite players. I made a mistake.”

Leone said he was shocked to lose his job of six years.

“I apologized for it,” Leone said, according to the paper. “I apologized 20 million times. I never bad-mouthed the organization before. I made one mistake and they terminate me? And they couldn’t even bring me into the office to talk to me? They had to do it over the phone? At least look me in the eye. To get done dirty like this, I can’t believe it. I’m devastated.”

The Eagles confirmed that Leone was a part-time staff member, but didn’t comment further.

Way to go Eagles, you let Dawkins walk by low balling him, then when an employee is a true fan, you fire him!! You were about to be disloyal to your QB McNabb if I’m not mistaken till he turned it around. Now this guy might not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he was working for the Eagles, enough said !!

The San Diego Chargers have presented LaDainian Tomlinson with what they say is their final restructured contract offer in an attempt to hold onto the five-time Pro Bowl running back.

The offer is for less money than the $24 million Tomlinson is scheduled to make by 2011. The terms of the restructuring are not known.

Tomlinson has three years remaining on an eight-year contract he signed in 2004 that, at the time, made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.

Tomlinson, 29, battled injuries to his toe, knee and groin last season and had a career-low 292 rushing attempts and 1,110 yards. He has played his entire eight-year career with the Chargers, but he’s been injured at playoff time the last two years.

His current contract, like many in the NFL, was backloaded and the Chargers are looking for salary cap flexibility.
